Biography

Michael Terry was born in 1947 in Folkestone on the English coast. After moving around the country and living abroad for a while, he returned to Folkestone to study Graphic Design and Illustration at art school. He then moved to London and for five years worked with various design groups and advertising agencies as a designer and typographer before going freelance as an illustrator. He has been awarded a D&AD award for illustration and a Mecanorma award for best poster illustration.

Since the mid 1990s, Michael has been a successful book illustrator and has illustrated over 12 books for children.

Michael lives and works by the coast in England with his partner Lindsey and three children. He also has three grown-up sons.

How do you feel about being shortlisted for the Red House Children's Book Award?
Delighted!
Did you enjoy drawing dinosaurs as a child?
Yes, I have nearly always loved dinosaurs and drawing them. They are so bizarre it's hard to believe that they actually existed!
What is your favourite subject to draw?
Animals and caricatures of people.
What do you must enjoy about illustrating books for children?
They are so creative and fun to work on.
What is your favourite children's book?
Any well written, amazingly illustrated book.
Where is your favourite place in the world?
Anywhere with my children.
What's your favourite joke?
What did the camera say to the roll of film?
"Why are you always so negative!"
If you could have any super power what would it be?
To be able to convince people how they should treat others and the planet.
What makes you laugh?
Monty Python, Black Adder
Who is your hero?
Anybody who goes out of their way to help others.
