Questions & Answers

How do you feel about being shortlisted for the Red House Children's Book Award?
I am absolutely delighted! Especially as the books are judged entirely by children. It's very exciting to be in the running for the award and I'm looking forward to the ceremony in May very much.
What subject do you enjoy drawing the most?
My recent favourite has to be bears.....so you can imagine the fun I had with Bottom's Up!
What was the best part of illustrating Bottoms Up?
I had great fun deciding what type of underpants each of the animals would choose to wear.
Did you liaise with Jeanne Willis before beginning your illustrations?
Yes, before I began Jeanne and I did chat about the story to decide what sort of look and feel we wanted the book to have.
What is your favourite children's book?
Blimey! There are so many to choose from. I have to say Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor by Mervyn Peake because it is one of my favourites from my childhood. The pirates in it are fantastic. I must admit they scared me a bit.... and I loved it!
Where is your favourite place in the world?
The Mediterranean coast (swimming underwater through beams of sunlight. bliss!)
What's your favourite joke?
Two goldfish in a tank. One says to the other, "So, how do you drive this thing?"
If you could have any super power what would it be?
The ability to fly...without needing to flap my arms.
What makes you laugh?
I feel a bit guilty about this one...but truthfully: Dogs with cones on.
Who is your hero?
Mr. Incredible (and David Attenborough)
